23 Mar 2014 Circuit Hero One Race 2: Zhang Shan-Qi wins again
At 10am on 23 March 2014, Pan Delta Super Racing Festival is awash with sunshin, which contrast greatly with the previous week's weather. The beautiful sunshine reflects brightly and colourfully off the cars and beauties at the circuit.
With a grandstand full of spectators, the Circuit Hero One racers once again get ready for another chance of glory, looking to win the second race of the season.
Cars line up according to Saturday's race results. No. 37 Zhang Shan-Qi, driving a Ferrari 458, is on pole position. Second place is occupied by Bill O'Brien's Caterham. Li Qing-Xin and Jonathan Flinn are at the back of the grid after retiring from yesterday's race. They will have to put in some extra effort if they are to get on the podium.
The race begins with a warm up lap. At the start, Zhang Shan-Qi's Ferrari 458 powers into the lead. Unless an accident occurs, it is unlikely anyone can threaten his dominance.
Radical driver Jonathan Flinn starts from third place from last. Maximising his car's light weight and aerodyanmics advantages, he passes many cars at the start, and at the end of the lap he is already up to sixth place. The prototype is performing well so far.
One of the Subarus have an accident at turn 4, although it manages to negotiate the corner, it stops at the outside turf of turn 4, in a rather dangerous postion. Overtaking is still going on among the other cars, with Jonathan Flinn keep on improving.
The other back of the field starter Li Qing-Xin is also improving his position and is already up to fourth by lap 3. Jonathan Flinn makes a mistake at turn 4 on lap 4, but he recovers and resumes in 12th place.
Meanwhile Zhang Shan-Qi keeps setting new lap records, on lap 4 he makes a 1:41.500, Bill O'Brien is more than 20 seconds behind. A stronger opponent is probably what is needed to beat him.
Li Qing-Xin is by now up to third place. Jonathan Flinn again embarks on another overtaking journey. With half the race gone, Zhang Shan-Qi improves his best lap by 0.2 second and leads by 40 seconds. At the rate of his progress, he could lap the entire field.
On lap 7, Zhang Shan-Qi is now behind no. 12 Jonathan Flinn, who is now in 8th place. With two laps to go, the Ferrari is leading by a minute.
At the flag, Zhang Shan-Qi wins comfortably and he has lapped everyone up to seventh place. Bill O'Brien finishes second, a minute behind. He is not under much pressure either. Li Qing-Xin takes third place and this podium place should help erase some of the pain from yesterday's retirement.
The question is, will there be anyone who can take the fight to Zhang Shan-Qi's Ferrari 458 in the next Pan Delta in June?
