12 Oct 2013 CLIO R9: Byron Tong Dominates in Zhuhai
Byron Tong’s faultless drive earned him a comfortable win in 2013 Clio Cup China Series R9; while newcomer Alan Lee got a stunning Class B win.
The race got underway with Byron Tong, the pole-sitter, successfully defended his lead at Turn 1. Behind him, it was mayhem. 2nd placed Yang Xu got out of shape in T4 and forced Tommy Chan wide. That gave the opportunity to Yu Kam Cheong and Kenneth Lau to go through to 2nd and 3rd place.
By Lap 2, Byron Tong had already developed a 3-second margin and led comfortably. Tommy Chan recovered from his off and passed Kenneth Lau to 3rd place and stuck behind Yu Kam Cheong. The duo then started their battle throughout the race. Behind them, Kenneth Ma and Yang Xu also had a battle of their own.
Yu Kam Cheong looked set for a podium finished, but his car suddenly lost speed 2 laps from finishing. Tommy Chan and Kenneth Lau then took 2nd and 3rd. But they still cannot challenge Byron Tong’s lead and Byron took his second win of the season. Tommy Chan and Kenneth Lau complete the podium.
Kenneth Ma defended Yang Xu to 4th. While Alan Lee, who is new to Clio races, scored a fine 6th and Class B win. Yu Kam Cheong could only managed 7th after his misfortune. Huang Yi and Ye Xingping got 8th and 9th overall and Class B podium.
Hu Cheng Wei and Benson Wong battle through the race and ended up 10th and 11th respectively.
The season finale will be held on Sunday.
