16 Sep 2013 Pan Delta Super Racing Festival Circuit Hero One Race 1 - Ferraris wins hard fought race
On 14 September 2013, Pan Delta Super Racing Festival Circuit Hero One Race 1 opens the curtains for the race weekend. Italian driver Mario Ferraris, driving a Mercedes AMG C63 race car, wins the race after some serious fighting for 10 laps. Bill O'Brien and Chinese driver Li Qing-Xin finish second and third.
The battle between Simon Yam Chi-Yuen and Mario Ferraris was highly anticipated before the race. The former, as a former champion, has faced great challenges from the latter. With the latter winning races one after another, Simon is sure to want to take some shine off his glories.
Simon Yam was clearly fired up in the free practice session when he was fast and steady. On the other hand, Mario's race car seemed to struggle and not as fast as the two previous races. In qualifying, Simon managed to edge out Mario, as a clear statement of his intention.
But all good things come to an end. After taking pole position in qualifying, Simon Yam had an accident with a rival and despite his team's effort in repairing the car, he was not able to make the race in the afternoon. But Mario Ferraris found out his opposition was to come from another corner, Bill O'Brien's Caterham.
Maybe because his Mercedes C63 was not prepared properly, at the start, he gets away poorly, allowing the Caterhams and Atoms to get ahead. Mario now has a fight in his hands. Although he is already up to fourth place by turn 5, and improved to second on lap 2 at the main straight, he still has Bill O'Brien to deal with further up the road.
Mario soon begins to attack but Bill O'Brien makes good defensive moves. The light weight Caterham allows Bill to brake late into corners, preventing any moves at the slow turn 4 and turn 9. The two battled hard for 4 laps as the Mercedes' tyres begin to fade. Just when the spectators begin to believe Bill O'Brien could pull off a great win, Mario manages to pass around the outside on lap 6.
Without anyone in front, Mario Ferraris began to relax and got into his rhythm, on lap 8 and 9 he set consecutive fastest laps, culminating in a 1:42.743 lap and securing the overall and GT class wins.
Class A is won by Bill O'Brien while classes B and C are won by Xu Xiang-Yi and Li Qing-Xin in their BMW M3 and Ariel Atom respectively.
Race 2 will be held at 10:00 on 15 September. It will determine all the various class winners for 2013.
