15 Jun 2013 Pan Delta AFR Series: Shigetomo Shimono claimed pole in wet qualifying
Japanese driver Shigetomo Shimono from Buzz racing got his first pole of the season under torrential rain at Zhuhai International Circuit, while championship leader Julio Acosta will start alongside him on the front row.
Non-stop rain over the weekend means that the track was soaked up when the cars take to the track at the qualifying session. Drivers tip-toed through the circuit in order keep the car on track. At the end, Shimono’s 1:55:375-lap was enough for him to beat the rest of the grid and took pole by the margin of over a second. Champ Motorsports’ Julio Acosta is 2nd, as he topped the timesheet early on before Shimono speed up later in the session.
PS Racing’s Pete Olson and female driver Alexandra Asamsoebrata will share the second row. Alexandra’s session ended up in dramatic session as he spun in the last corner and put her car dangerously on the track, which brought up a red flag and an early end of the session.
5th position will go to Roy Chiu. The Taiwan TV star is also the pole-man of the Asian Class; despite once went off in Turn 2. While fellow Asain Class drivers, rookie Neric Wei and newcomer Ni Weiliang will start in 7th and 8th respectively.
Master Class pole will go to ART’s Leo Wong, who will start the race in 6th. While the other Master Class driver Thomas Luedi failed to set a time as he had a mechanical failure on track. He put his stranded car at the apex of Turn 9 and brought out a red flag. Luedi will have to start at the back in Race 1.
