05 Jun 2012 Scirocco R-Cup China brought racing blast to Zhuhai

After April debut at Shanghai International Circuit, the 2012 Scirocco R-Cup China series traveled back to Zhuhai International Circuit (ZIC) for race 3 & race 4 on June 2nd & 3rd, 2012. Scirocco R-Cup China featured 21 drivers from 7 different countries & regions.

Saturday (Qualify + Race 3)

The first qualifying session saw David Cheng set 1:54.914 at his first try and it was the best lap of the session. Yuan Bo set 1:54.926 at lap 6, reserving the other spot on the front row of Scirocco R-Cup China race 3’s grid. Car No.11 Pu Jun Jin (1:55.267) qualified 3rd in session 1.

Race 3 was started at 14:22. Pole-sitter Cheng once got overtaken by Yuan, but managed to take the lead back. In the end, Cheng (Tianjin Zhonghui) won (23’13”839) and set the best lap of the race (1’54”912). Yuan (car No.9, Shanxi Sunfonda) captured 2nd (23’15”759), while Andrea Reggiani (car No.6, Guangdong Chengyong) finished 3rd.

Sunday (Race 4)

As the red lights went off, the drivers got off to a smooth start. Scirocco R drivers put up an exciting race for Zhuhai fans with a lot of close fight & overtaking. Cheng (Tianjin Zhonghui) won the race with only 0.1 seconds’ gap. Ida Masahiko (Henan International) captured 2nd, while Car No.1 Stefano Montesi (Shenzhen Huaxi) finished 3rd. Italian driver Reggiani set the best lap of the week (1’54”308).

Mr. Dominic Lyncker, Motorsport Director of Volkswagen Group China, indicated after the race:“ It was a brilliant weekend and our drivers managed to keep it exciting to the last second. I am impressed by the racing atmosphere here in Zhuhai. For season 2012, Scirocco R-Cup China will put more effort on better communicating with race fans. Take this weekend for instance; we took in some new element, such as track parade and introducing our drivers one-by-one to the spectators. Instead of just a good looking car & well painted helmet, we put a face to the driver, to create a better connection between the fans and their favourite racers."
