20 Jun 2010 Circuit Hero Road Sport Race 2: Yam Chi-Yuen and Sun Tit-Fan duel
At 3:45pm on 20th June 2010, with the sun still shining brightly, the 35 degree heat is making everyone sweat. The exciting races though, are keeping everyone enthusiastic.
Circuit Hero Road Sport originates from Circuit Hero GT, a race separated out from the original Circuit Hero, when turbo-charged and normally aspirated cars raced together. The cars in this class today can lap in 1:43s, just four seconds slower than the quickest Porsche GT3 car, racing on the same weekend. Other 2000cc touring cars regularly lap the circuit in 1:50s or more. This shows how powerful and well-tuned these cars are.
The drivers and cars have already done one race this morning, now they must venture onto the track for the second time today. The break has allowed them to re-adjust their cars and rest their bodies.
The race begins as the red lights go out. No.3 Yam Chi-Yuen leads with no. 1 Sun Tit-Fan in second place. But Sun Tit-Fan's start was better and he power his way through to the lead at turn 1. Yam Chi-Yuen follows on in second place while no. 88 Gao Tian-De tries to get around Yam for second.
After 1 lap, the top three cars forms the lead group and they are running close together. But soon, Sun Tit-Fan and Yam Chi-Yuen pick up their speed and begins to pull away from Gao Tian-De.
On lap 3, no. 1 Sun Tit-Fan still leads while Gao Tian-De drops further away. The aerodynamic wings on cars 1 and 3 clearly gives them an advantage over the rest of the field.
With half the race gone, no. 1 Sun Tit-Fan leads no. 3 Yam Chi-Yuen by 3.5 seconds, while Gao Tian-De is another 20 seconds behind. On lap 7, Sun Tit-Fan begins to lap backmarkers, some of them seem amazed that he is already lapping them, thus delaying Sun a little, allowing Yam Chi-Yuen to close a little. But as soon as there is a clear track, Sun Tit-Fan tries to break away, but Yam Chi-Yuen is able to keep up. Their gap is just a second.
On the last lap, Sun Tit-Fan expands the gap to 1.4 seconds, and they now lead the third placed man by a massive 40 seconds. At the last corner, Sun Tit-Fan successfully crosses the line for the win with no. 3 Yam Chi-Yuen in second place. No. 88 Gao Tian-De finishes a distant third, 47 seconds behind.
