30 May 2016 Xiao Jia-Wei takes win after chaotic race - Circuit Hero Two Race
At 2:20pm on 20 March 2016, the explosive Circuit Hero Two race cars are on track. More than 40 race cars line up all the way to turn 14, with pretty models walking around and professional mechanics preparing the cars with their tools. The race that started out as a grassroot race has grown to become one of the most professional and commercially successful races in the country.
Pole position is occupied by Xiao Jia-Wei in his GTI, with a best time of 1:46.425. His lap time is very fast if you consider that a 1000cc superbike manages on average 1:38s. This is a well-tuned race car. Apart from making the car lighter and safer, the engine has also been modified and the gearbox is changed to sequential. The budget required for this kind of modification is not grassroot level any more. Circuit Hero races has become the stage on which Pearl River Delta tuning companies show off their technical abilities. The results of the race could even directly affect the tuning companys sales figure. Some of the innovations also lead the trend in the tuning and modification industry.
Xiao Jia-Weis GTI is on pole position, Zhang Qian-Shangs BRZ is in second position, Chen Zhongs SEAT is third. Ding Shans Scirocco lines up in fourth place. The cars are what we are familiar with and they are why we love this race. They are close to our daily lives.
Red lights go off and the race begins. Xiao Jia-Wei gets away slowly, at turn 3 two of the cars touch and they go off the track left and right. They do not seem to suffer much damage. At turn 6, #98 spins around, then it slides off the track and hits the retaining wall.
Xiao Jia-Wei charges on among the chaos and gets back into the lead. Kuang Can-Wei is also up to second. Chen Bing-Xiong is in third place. On lap 5, Zhang Qian-Shangs BRZ passes Chen Bing-Xiong and then he overtakes Kuang Can-Wei, seemingly with ease. On lap 6, #39 loses control and spins into the sand trap. Many race cars develop problems and have to retire from the race. With the large number of entries it is inevitable that not all of them can make it to the end.
Zhang Qian-Shang is now two seconds behind leader Xiao Jia-Wei, with 3 laps to go. There is still an opportunity. Backmarkers continue to interrupt the two cars progress, negotiating through them will be a key issue for the two leaders. After getting by a series of backmarkers, Zhang Qian-Shang falls 5 seconds behind Xiao Jia-Wei.
Two laps to go, the engine of #10, which has stopped by the side of the track appears to be on fire. The car is moved away to a safe position. Marshals attend to the fiery race car without affecting the race.
At the end, Xiao Jia-Wei takes the first race win of the season. Zhang Qian-Shang finishes second and Kuang Can-Wei takes third place.
After the race Xiao Jia-Wei said,"The weather was good today. I made a poor start and dropped to third place. At turn 4 the SEAT spun around, I went left and took the lead back. After that I began to defend and pulled out a gap two laps later. Overall it was good and I want to thank my team."
Zhang Qian-Shang said,"Also at turn 4 when the SEAT spun, I went to his right side but I got overtaken and dropped to fourth place. After that I had to attack and attack. I only managed to catch Xiao Jia-Wei near the end, but it was too late. It is a bit of a pity but I am satisfied with the result."
Third placed man Kuang Can-Wei is a little disappointed. "The car had some problems and the result was not as good as last year. Third place is okay. There were too many incidents on track and a lot of yellow flags. I could not run freely because of too many uncertainties. I hope the next race will be better, both in terms of car condition and track situation."
