23 Mar 2014 Scirocco R Cup Race 2: William Lok wins fantastic race
At 10:50 on 23 March 2014, Scirocco R Cup China's second race is held at Zhuhai International Circuit as part of the Pan Delta Super Racing Festival (Spring Race). Bright sunshine makes the professionally prepared cars look better than ever. The cars stop on the grid as indicated by the beautiful race queens. The spectators are impressed and cannot hold their excitement.
On pole position is William Lok (#1), Andrea Reggiani is second (#21), #37 Carlo Piero Mantori starts in third position, alongside him is Naomi Schiff (#99).
The race begins as soon as the red lights go off. The drivers on the front row get away well, with #1 William Lok leading into turn 1, #21 Andrea Reggiani closely following. At turn 4, the tight corner means everyone have to follow through single file, getting everyone to fall in line.
After a lap, #1 William Lok and #21 Andrea Reggiani are separated by just 0.6 second, the gaps closes to 0.4 second on the following lap. #37 Carlo Piero Mantori follows the duo in third place, about a second behind.
Lap 3, just before turn 9, #21 Reggiani touches #1 Lok's rear, causing Lok to lose control slightly and drives onto the grass. Both car lose time in this incident and the lead group is changed. #8, #10, #99 and #9 move into the lead. As a result of this incident #21 and #37 retire from the race, while #1 William Lok remains on track, running in second place.
Lap 4, #11 Tian Liying loses control at turn 4 and goes straight on. Lap 6, #10 William Tan and #99 Naomi Schiff have a coming together, both cars run onto the grass on the outside of the corner. #10 is unable to recover due to the car sinking into the sand trap.
Two laps from the end, #8 Kevin Tse suddenly slows down, he drives the car slowly off the track and on the grass. #1 William Lok now leads the race once again, but #99 has caught up with him and the gap between them is a mere second. The fight for race win is on!
Last lap, #99 Naomi Scioff tries a move but #1 William Lok is having none of it. At turn 12, Naomi pulls out from William's slipstream, but William manages to fend her off. At turn 14, #99 Naomi makes her last move and gets alongside, the two cars cross the line together and no one is sure who has won until the times appear on the timing screen: #1 William Lok wins by 0.087 second! #36 David Lau takes third place and the rookies' class win.
William Lok says after the race, "Today was a very exciting race. On lap 3 Andrea and I had a very big impact, after that the car had a few problems. Then there were many incidents and I was running in a good position. For the last two laps I was chased by the other cars and all I could do was defend. Fortunately I was able to win marginally. It has been a good day."
Third placed David Lau says, "Today was a exciting race. I was overall very lucky and I am very happy. #9 started alongside me and he made a good start. We fought each other early on but in the middle of the race I settled for my position. There were a lot of debris on track and I had to be careful not to run over them, it would be tragic to have to retire like Kevin Tse did."
Naomi Schioff, from Belgium, performed brilliantly today. She lost control at turn 1 but she was able to recover from that, ending in the climatic battle near the end.
