18 Mar 2012 ART back on top - Li Zhi Cong takes pole position for AFR 2012 season opener
Both official practices as well as qualifying for the opening two rounds of the 2012 AFR season took place at the Zhuhai International Circuit today, under sunny skies and a warm 24 degree temperature. With a large crowd and television coverage for this weekend’s season opener Pan Delta Racing Festival, AFR put on an exciting show with multiple drivers taking turns leading today’s two official practices and qualifying.
However, Asia Racing Team [ART]’s experienced Formula pilot Li Zhi Cong led both official practices today and took pole position a full 1.1 seconds of the opposition, at 1:37.542. In 2nd was another experienced AFR pilot, Wayne Shen of Modena Motorsports, at 1:38.665. His teammate, former AFR competitor Patrice Bonzom, rounded off the top 3 with a 1:38.852, just two tenths behind Wayne Shen, surely both driver will battle for 2nd from tomorrow’s first race start.
In 4th was the famous Taiwanese singer-actor Tse Chiu, driving for PTRS Racing Team, in his very first formula race weekend. Shaun Thong, the young driver from FRD’s PTP training course and driver development program, managed to take an impressive 6th in his first AFR race weekend. Although anther FRD Racing Team’s new driver Jimmy Chan was only managed to maintain P8 in tomorrow’s grid, compared with the practice in the morning, he was much better in the race.
